The Road to Rome

Pompey takes a bow Why did Pompey have such a bad haircut?

Pompey (Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus) did insist everyone call him Pompey the Great -- he thought of himself as a new Alexander. To make it clear to anyone who saw him, he had his hair cut into the shaggy bob Alexander had made distinctively his own three centuries before. Did the look work for a middle-aged, slightly overweight man? Most people didn't think so, no.

History judges him as a fairly moderate man who attempted to restore order to the chaos of Rome, with a respectable private life, and devoted to the two women he married.

Of the men in the first triumverate, Marcus Licinius ("the unlucky") Crassus was primarily there to provide funds and soon was pushed aside in the battle between Caesar and Pompey. Then the two most powerful men in Rome waged an ugly fight to become sole dictator.

One guess who won.

Would the real Pompey please stand up
